On Saturday 5th March 2001, 11 Cubs took part in their chefs badge. The task was to prepare, cook and serve a two course meal. The 11 Cubs were set into 3 groups which had to make one of three main courses and one of the sweets.
The menu options were either:
Home made Shepherds Pie and Apple Crumble.
Savoury Meatballs in gravy with home made oven potatoes wedges, and a Peach and Strawberry flan.
Home made Beef Burger and freshly made shallow fried chips.
To accomplished cooks these dishes are reasonably simple, however for our Cubs they they not only learnt how to cook the meals but also learnt a lot about where the food came from. They learnt that chips don't just come out of a bag or from McChippys, they learnt how the food is prepared. They did their own preparation including learning how to handle the very sharp knives to cut and prepare the potatoes and onions. Onions can be prepared without tears so the teams will tell you. While the Chips were cooking they were instructed in how a chip pan fire may start and how it may be dealt with safely. They had to lay and set a simple table for the teams and then all that there was left to do was to eat their meals. A common comment was it is better than my Mums cooking and they all enjoyed the food they had cooked.
