Wet! Wet! Wet
And that was not just the sea.

On a very wet new years day morning eighty eight dippers gave a great spectacular performance as they  took part in the 1st Birdham and Witterings Scout Group New Years Day Big Dip. Attended by over fifteen hundred spectators, braving the weather watching from the Shore Road beach and promenade, the dippers after the judging had taken place for their fancy dress at the Shore Pub, proceed along Shore Road before arriving at the assembly point for the best dressed prize awards.

They then assembled on the beach for a photo call and at the final countdown joined the white water.

Local businesses including Shells Toys, Candies, Calamitys,
F, A.Holland&Son and Castle Printers were all there supporting the event and taking part.

Our thanks must also go to St John’s Ambulance, Our Water Safety Crew, Shore Pub, First Responders and Sussex 4x4 members along with EMS Services and Sussex fire and Rescue for without their support it would not be possible to run this event with the safety required.

The money raised on this event will go to support Scouting in the area of Birdham and Witterings and the surrounding area. Our Sincere thanks to all who supported as Dippers or Spectators as without you we would not be able to run this community event which so many enjoy.

        2011 Report

Scout Group Make A New Years Day Splash

Over 2500 Spectators wrapped up warm and watched the 1st Birdham and Witterings Scout Groups new years day 'BIG DIP 2011', from the foreshore, applauding over 60 entrants for the event. The Beach, Bookers Green, and along the promenade towards West Wittering was teaming with spectators happily throwing money into our collection buckets, and keen to catch a glimpse of this year’s  batch of dippers.

Shortly after 12 Noon following the judging by two of our sponsors Wallace Butchers and Shells Toyshop, the entrants were led out from the Shore Inn to the cheers of the crowds. The dippers then made their way to the sea, some staying in longer than others, it was a sight to believe .The entrants then braved freezing temperatures to entertain our local residents and visitors for our Annual event, who then following the dip visited our local shops bringing hopefully much business to the village.

The group would like to thank everyone who supported and helped in any way to make this year’s event so successful, including the dippers who are the main attraction, for without them there could be no event. A massive thank you to all of the leaders and Executive Committee, who behind the scenes, apart from their own section commitments make it take place. To Castle Printers, Jo Jo’s, Calamity’s, and the Safety and Service Crews, St John’s Ambulance and  EMS Services , who supported us and kept us very safe. And a very big thank you to the Shore Pub for the use of their facilities once again.

The bucket collection and sponsorship money ,hopefully will raise over £1000 to support the Scout groups activities, equipment and general overheads, along with funds to rebuild our H.Q. in the near future for the young people in our area.

Pictures from Big Dip 2011 are on the 'Group Photographs' page.
